The Aswan High Dam on the Nile River in Egypt
is one of the largest embankment dams in the world.
The Nile River flows from south to north.
In this picture, taken from space by
the United States National Aeronautical and
Space Administration (NASA), you can see
that building the Aswan High Dam created a
reservoir just south of it called Lake Nasser.
The small portion of the reservoir that extends
south into Sudan is called Lake Nubia by the
Sudanese people The Aswan High Dam was the second
dam built across the Nile River near Aswan. The
first Aswan Dam, built in 1902, is known today as the
Aswan Low Dam.
